Welcome

At Diamond Creek Heritage Sheep we raise purebred English Leicester Longwool, and Black Welsh Mountain sheep, both of which are considered rare breeds on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy List (ALBC). In addition we raise 75% and above Wensleydale sheep. We strive to raise these animals 'naturally', in a grass-fed environment, and practice sustainable agricultural methods. Our goal is to provide quality lean meat, lusterous long fleece, rovings, and breeding stock. We have both white and naturally-colored sheep in the English Leicester , and the Wensleydale breeds. Our Black Welsh Mountain sheep are, of course, their lovely black.

Sustainable livestock farming requires a pasture-based system where the animals can roam freely, eating nutritious indigenous plants and grasses in their natural habitat. This type of a system produces more nutritious and safer food than can be raised in an industrial farming situation. Our pasture fed heritage sheep receive no growth hormones, nor unnatural feed additives, or animal by-products. Pasturing our English Leicester, Black Welsh Mountain, and Wensleydale sheep from start to finish, increases the animal's welfare and also helps to decrease environmental damage.

Industrial farming has also reduced the genetic diversity of both crops and animals raised today, enough so that many breeds of livestock and plant life are critically endangered. Raising heritage breeds, in our case heritage sheep, preserves and protects valuable genetic resources that will be lost if not protected. Theses genetics allow critical variations in many breed's ability to sustain themselves in differing environments, resist various diseases, while providing biodiversity to the entire food chain.
