An old time shearer, a good's night rest, and the girls off food and water for a few hours all makes for a better day of shearering. After 20-25 head our backs are sore, the girls feel naked and everyone says next year we will raise less sheep. Somehow that never seems the case. Once sheared the fleece is roughly skirted and placed on drying racks to cool off, labeled and sorted as we go. A few days later a final skirting is finished and the wool put away.
Our wool rovings are machine processed at this time at a small owner operated mill in Forence, Montana. At Kalaya Farms I can always depend on a high calibre product and the individual one on one attention these long fleeces benefit from. Hand carded batts are roughly 8 inches in width by 22 inches long, and avaialable by request.
As for selling and shipping, we will typically wash a raw fleece at least once so that our buyers are not paying for dirt and lanolin. If you prefer we don't do this please just request so in an Email.
