It starts with the food. Our girls, and guys, graze from April to late October on pasture. They have their mineral supplement, and treats when they stay put. As Halloween rolls around it is usually time to begin with grass hay, since after a season of grazing, most of the girls are pretty plump and back to shape after weaning. During the winter months, its grass hay in the morning and alfalfa/grass at night. It is always an adventure keeping the "tubbies"(read Longwool Leicesters) lean and the Merinos healthy when feeding in a group. Some day I will have all those different paddocks with winter water ready. Grain starts mid-late February in time for babies. Free choice minerals and Vitalix tubs all winter help to ensure all the nutrients for helathy moms, babies, and wool.
We still shear before lambing, well I don't shear personally. My shearer does this and when he retires I am going to be a sad soul. The fleeces are hand skirted and placed on drying racks the day of shearing. What doesn't leave our farm as fleece, we then either leave in its natural color, or hand dye using both natural and commercial acid dyes. Our batches are small and always one of kind.
When nature and time allows, the Wensleydale and Longwool Leicester fleeces are personally deliverd to a small local mill. Here I can speak directly to the shop owner and decide together in which direction to go and with which fleece. I am always assured of a beautiful product with the personal care given when using Kalaya Farms, Florence, Montana. While commercially prepared in these one fleece batches, Robyn, owner of the shop, provides me with a product the next best thing to hand spun. The quality speaks for itself.
